When Société Générale and Talan Take on Big Data Challenges Together

Context
As one of the leading European financial services groups with over 150 years of expertise, Société Générale supports 29 million customers daily thanks to its 138,000 employees present in 62 countries worldwide.
The Société Générale group brings together three complementary business pillars: retail banking networks in France, international retail banking networks, insurance and financial services, and corporate and investment banking and investor solutions.
Challenges
Faced with increasingly large volumes of data and the emergence of new competitors within a completely disrupted banking sector, the financial department of Société Générale reached out to its solution center to address a critical challenge: having a data-centric and integrated SUBU solution for Central Departments capable of providing a 360-degree vision of cost management.
By calling on Talan, Société Générale wanted to be able to centralize granular financial and non-financial information within a single interface, thereby gaining depth of analysis and answering the Group's operational and strategic questions.
Methods et Solutions
First step of the project: identify "golden sources" and repositories to facilitate application traceability. The idea was to clean all this data to start fresh from the true golden source. A time-consuming process made possible by the agile method, which saved precious time through delivery sequences every two weeks.
Second step of the project: allow teams to look forward to new perspectives in artificial intelligence through the rapid distribution of dashboards and the implementation of KPIs via machine learning algorithms capable of identifying trends from their CRM—specifically, the monthly and quarterly closings of the group's results.
To carry out this project, Société Générale relied on two technologies with Talan's advice: Microsoft Azure to host the BI part in the cloud to accelerate time to market, promote pay-as-you-go, and benefit from scalability adapted to real needs. All integrated using tools from Talend, a Qlik company.
"The solution allows the cross-referencing of financial and non-financial data to produce specific KPIs such as internal IT costs, real estate-related costs, etc.," explains Ludovic. "Furthermore, it also promotes the rationalization of IT applications at the CIO level."

We have thus obtained finer visualization and better mastery of our data thanks to monitoring that allows for the identification of transformation processes. Now, the IT department is able to provide the financial department with qualified, high-quality data every morning at 8:30 AM.
